Local sanitation officials are urging residents to avoid "clogging the arteries" of sewer systems by not dumping fats, oils or grease down their drains.

The most common clogging culprits are meat juices and fats, food scraps, cooking oils, lard, condiments, gravy, baked goods, dairy products, shortening, butter and margarine.

Staff members at County Sanitation District 1, which provides wastewater collection for unincorporated and many incorporated areas of Sacramento County, have kicked off a 2007 Fats, Oils and Grease (FOG) public awareness campaign to reduce incidences of clogged sewer pipes and backups into homes and neighborhoods.

They advise wiping out pots, pans and dishes before washing with a paper towel that is then thrown in the garbage.

The also suggest pouring fats and oils after they have cooled into a disposable container such as an empty coffee can, and using sink strainers to prevent food items from going down the drain.
