It is like a long-distance relationship that finally merges under one roof.

For years the UC Davis Medical School has existed in two worlds. One is on the edge of Sacramento's Oak Park, site of the UC Davis Medical Center, where the third- and fourth-year students get hands-on training. The other is back on campus at Davis, where the first- and second-year students get basic training in the sciences. The arrangement has worked. But it has forced students and faculty to drive back and forth between Davis and Sacramento. One home is better than two. And that home is now Sacramento. Welcome.

The arrival of hundreds of medical students -- and the construction of a 121,000 square-foot building where they will be taught -- is a major injection of brains and bucks to nearby Oak Park. These students are going to live in Sacramento, many within walking distance of the medical center. They aren't rowdy students who threaten local property values; their impact should be positive.
