Fire proves hard to reach

Firefighters struggled Wednesday night to get to a wildland fire creeping along the American River Parkway near River Park's Paradise Beach.
Dense growth and sandy terrain impeded firefighters' access to the slow-moving fire, said Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Capt. Jim Doucette. Two grass rigs became stuck in the sand enroute to the flames, he said.
Firefighters instead were forced to rely mostly on floating water pumps to extinguish the blaze, Doucette said, as well as long hoses.
No structures were threatened, Doucette said.
Crews were expected to be on scene through the night.
