There is a very nice story in the Bee about rafting and hiking on the American River, even during this time of year.

You may encounter playful river otters, schools of huge fish streaming beneath you or beavers diving with a splash of their tails as they see you pass by. You won't think about work or problems or politics or your losing football team. It's the perfect escape.”
