Roseville bans park smoking

ROSEVILLE – The City Council has approved a new ordinance banning smoking in public parks and open space areas.

In a 4-1 vote Wednesday night, with Councilman John Allard opposed, the council approved the first reading of the ordinance that prohibits smoking in the city's 55 parks and more than 4,000 acres of open space, including streambeds and bicycle trails.

Golf courses, however, are exempt.

Roseville will join a growing number of California cities that have outlawed smoking in parks to reduce health risks from secondhand smoke, particularly to children and infants, and to minimize the risk of fire.

Enforcement will rely heavily on voluntary compliance.

The city will spend $10,000 for a public education campaign and to post signs in parks and open space areas.
