The Sacramento International Auto Show, showcasing most of the 2008 motor vehicles to be sold in Northern California and a diverse crop of environmentally friendly autos, kicks off its four-day run today at Cal Expo.

Show organizers are billing it as the biggest new-car event in Sacramento history, taking up 13 buildings of the venue at 1600 Exposition Blvd. Thirty-six manufacturers are displaying vehicles on more than 500,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

Vehicles run the gamut, from high-performance exotics to cars equipped with state-of-the-art hybrid, electric and fuel cell systems.

"We are really pleased to take the Sacramento International Auto Show to a whole new environmental level," said Stacey Castle of Castle Communications, the Gold River company that produces the show. "This year, we are giving the public the ability to not only see and get good information on a variety of alternative-fuel vehicles, but to also test drive those vehicles and see how they perform."

The West Sacramento-based California Fuel Cell Partnership is displaying a fleet of fuel cell vehicles from different manufacturers, including the world's fastest fuel cell auto – the Ford Fusion 999, which is engineered to top 200 miles per hour.

Also featured are hybrids and alternative-fuel vehicles produced by Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, Honda, Mercury, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, Saturn and Toyota.
