Homeless people who created an illegal tent city on private property in northern Sacramento got a temporary reprieve from the outdoors Wednesday.
At least 70 vouchers for a two-night stay in motels were distributed to people who had been threatened with citations for trespassing on property owned by Union Pacific Railroad.
Sacramento County also moved up the opening date for its winter shelter at Cal Expo from Thanksgiving week to Friday night, said Suzanne Hammer, program manager of homeless services for the county Department of Human Assistance.
