Roseville snuffs smoking at parks

ROSEVILLE – The City Council voted 4-1 Wednesday night to ban smoking in public parks.

Councilman John Allard cast the dissenting vote on the ordinance, after pointing out smoking is an addiction.

"One thing we didn't talk about is what we're doing as far as the rights of other people," Allard said. "Think about how this affects 15 to 20 percent of the people in Roseville who do smoke and the fact that we're saying, 'You're not welcome in our parks.' "

Allard asked fellow council members to direct city staff to look at ways the city can support or be involved in smoking-cessation programs.

The council agreed, and staff will come back in 30 days with proposals.

The park smoking ban will take effect early next year.
