If you've never dipped a paddle or disappeared into the cold, swirling froth, the California Rivers Festival wants to show you how it's done.

The annual festival on March 15 (we wanted to give early notice) is presented by Friends of the River, a group that works on behalf of rivers. The California Rivers Festival is an appreciation of our rivers and a chance to learn about kayaking, whitewater rafting, fly fishing and other activities.

Workshops, a swap meet, auctions, the latest gear, films, informational booths, food and entertainment are scheduled during this year's festival at Sacramento Waldorf School in Fair Oaks. The festival coincides with the annual start of the snow melt and the rise in the rivers.

Safety, tips on packing for river trips and smart planning will be addressed, along with presentations about river trips as close as the American River and as far away as the Blue Nile through Ethiopia and Sudan.

The Granite Bay Fishermen's Association will provide hands-on demonstrations of casting and fly-tying, and top outdoor photographers will teach a workshop on photographing rivers.

Other workshop topics will include river restoration and protection, hiking, geology, dam removal, raft repair, water management and river conservation.

Admission is free.
