Senate Leadership on Canal & Dams

Those are the only sticking points and one California US Senator says they need to be on the table, even more strongly worded in her editorial of last year

“So my message is this - find a solution that ensures that California has an adequate water supply for the future. Doing nothing is not an alternative.

“So we must have a plan that includes conservation, recycling, desalination, groundwater recharge and, yes, surface storage. There is no one silver bullet. All must be done to ensure that California is not left scrambling for water.”

In a rare rebuke to her fellow Democrats, Sen. Dianne Feinstein has chastised the leaders of the state Legislature for refusing to engage in talks over California's long-term water policy.

The move by Feinstein the dean of California Democrats comes two weeks after she and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that water talks had restarted.

In a letter obtained Thursday by The Associated Press, Feinstein said she was dismayed to learn that her party's leadership has refused to negotiate since then with the governor and legislative Republicans.

"I am deeply disappointed," she wrote. "This is not in keeping with the spirit of our agreement to try to find a way forward."

The letter was dated Wednesday and addressed to state Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata, D-Oakland, and Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles.
