City officials Thursday announced that acquisition of the 700 and 800 blocks of K Street is complete, a milestone in the redevelopment of one of the most blighted sections of downtown.

The city now will embark on a complicated land transfer, said Assistant City Manager John Dangberg.

On the south side of the 700 block, a development team headed by Joe Zeiden will redevelop about 55,000 square feet of retail space, anchored by a 10,000-square-foot Z Gallerie store. Zeiden owns the Z Gallerie chain.

Dangberg said construction will begin in February and stores will open in October.

The second project, on the 800 block, is headed by developers Mo Mohanna, John Lambeth and John Saca. That project will include two high-rise towers, including 200 to 600 condominiums and offices with ground-floor retail space.

City approvals are pending on that project and no start of construction has been set, Dangberg said.
