Watch out. On foothills roads these days, the buck stops here.

It's winter mating season for deer, and that has led in recent days to a spike in the number of "vehicle v. deer" collisions in the populated lower reaches of El Dorado and Placer counties, as well as on mountain roads.

Friday alone, at least four deer were reported hit and killed by cars in the local foothills, and another 10 deer carcasses had to be cleared after being struck on Interstate 80 in the mountains above Auburn.

From now through the end of the year, state Fish and Game officials say, male deer are on the move, agitated and focused on one thing -- and it's not cars.

"The buck are looking for doe and they are not paying attention to anything else," warned Mark Dinger of Caltrans. "They aren't the smartest animals in the world."

California Highway Patrol officials are cautioning drivers to slow down and watch out.
