Local Result of Global Community

As our world shrinks, the emergence of creatures from the other side of the planet in our local waterways will increase, and deciding what to do about it while weighing cost against benefit, will be a chore for public leadership.

The public is being asked to help stop an invasive aquatic mussel from taking over state waterways.

The freshwater quagga mussel, a native of Ukraine, was found in Lake Havasu and the Colorado River about two weeks ago. The dime-sized creature looks like a small clam and reproduces rapidly. State officials fear it will damage stream and lake habitats and waterworks.

"We are taking urgent and necessary steps statewide to prevent their spread," Mike Chrisman, California Resources secretary, said in a statement.
