Arden Arcade

SacUnion.com (which your blogger was honored to be a part of bringing back to publication in Sacramento through consulting with the founding group, proposing the web address of sacunion.com, and hosting the first board meeting of the new board at my home) put this story on their front page, where it deserves to be as it will affect the local region considerably if another new city is born, as it appears is pretty much under way.

SACUNION EXCLUSIVE: The City of Arden Arcade?

SACRAMENTO – Following the example of Elk Grove, Citrus Heights and Rancho Cordova, the community of Arden Arcade is making a play to become Sacramento County’s latest city.

Completing the first step in what is expected to be a long journey, the Arden Arcade Incorporation Committee announced Feb. 12 that they have met the mark for the signatures needed to qualify their petition to incorporate. The group needed 9,500 registered voters to sign their petition to incorporate and they have collected more than 12,000.

“Although we are confident we have the necessary signatures, we feel it will show a strong statement of support to turn in as many signatures as possible,” said Joel Archer, chairman of the incorporation committee and a 10-year resident of the community.

If the area successfully incorporates, the city of Arden Arcade would become the seventh city in Sacramento County, following recent incorporations by Rancho Cordova in 2003, Elk Grove in 2000 and Citrus Heights in 1997. If the incorporation committee can properly navigate through the many hurdles involved in city incorporation, Arden Arcade will take its estimated $33 million in local revenue and set up their own government.

Covering the 21 square miles just east of Sacramento and west of Carmichael, Arden Arcade is home to approximately 80,000 people and 2,000 businesses. The boundaries for the community place it between the American River and Interstate 80, and Ethan Avenue to Mission Avenue. And that name, “Arden Arcade,” it’s the community’s designation with the U.S. Census Bureau, but not necessarily the name of the new city.
