A Rancho Cordova builder with a big reputation for fast work in emergencies won the coveted contract Monday to rebuild a collapsed Oakland freeway -- and added a touch of drama.
Sliding his pen into his shirt pocket after the contract signing in Sacramento, C.C. Myers immediately announced his intent to finish the project in just 25 days.
That's half the time state officials set for a quick reopening of the freeway, a key commuter connection to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
Myers, a hulking, gravel-voiced builder who won praise for rebuilding part of a freeway in 66 days after the 1994 Northridge earthquake, said this job won't be hard.
"It's very little work, mostly coordinating," Myers said. "I expect to be done before 25 days."
He must reconstruct two collapsed sections of freeway. Precast materials will be trucked to the site and crews will put them in place, Myers said.
Workers "are sitting there (in Oakland) waiting to go" and would be on site in 15 minutes after the signing, he said.
If Myers makes good on his quick-fix prediction, his company will score, thanks to a bonus clause in the contract that will pay $200,000 a day extra for each day the job is finished prior to June 27.
