New California Dam

Here is one that might get built and at around $25 million it is quite a bit less than the one we need.

Ten years ago, the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Cathedral City leaders agreed a dam was needed to prevent damages to the southwestern edge of the city should a possible 100-year flood occur.

Now, thanks to a meeting Monday night between city and tribal leaders, officials believe they've taken solid steps toward actually getting the proposed dam built.

The Cathedral City City Council, acting as the city's Redevelopment Agency, hosted a quarterly meeting Monday with the Tribal Council.

Mayor Kathy DeRosa said the dam has been a top priority for the city.

However, it wasn't until she and Councilman Greg Pettis recently visited U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., and U.S. Rep. Mary Bono, R-Palm Springs, in Washington, D.C., that the dam's construction became a priority for others, which could lead to federal funding.

It's anticipated to cost more than $25 million.
