A new bridge and roadway eagerly awaited by motorists who once traveled Folsom Dam Road are rising from the banks of the American River and taking shape among the hills, largely out of sight of daily commuters.
Construction of the $120 million road and river crossing below Folsom Dam began in March. Rich Lorenz, Folsom public works director, said he expects the new route, linking East Natoma Street with Folsom-Auburn Road, to open to traffic by early 2009.
"A lot depends on what happens through the winter," he said.
But unlike many construction projects, Lorenz said, the bridge work won't be hampered much by inclement weather. Concrete sets better when it is cool and moist, he said.
The emerging two-mile road follows Folsom Dam Road northwest from East Natoma Street, then veers south, cutting across a portion of state prison property, and crosses the river to connect with Folsom-Auburn Road about 350 feet south of Folsom Dam Road.
