Academy officials plan 'green' school
Two energy-efficient buildings in the works
By ADAM AASEN REVIEW-JOURNAL
New Horizons Academy of Las Vegas is about to embark on its biggest science project yet: a $5.5 million "green" school that is to produce its own energy.
A "green building" is one that has been constructed to be as environmentally and ecologically beneficial as possible. Ideally, such buildings create and recycle their own energy, water, and materials.
School officials, with Nevada Power, on Wednesday announced a plan to build the valley's first U.S. Green Building Council-certified school. The aim is to reduce energy costs, create a better learning environment for students and help the private school expand its operations.
