American Rivers Projects

Knowing when sewage is released into our river and using storm water run-off as wisely as possible, are both needed projects for our American River.

An excerpt.

HEALTHY WATERS CAMPAIGN

Many of our rivers look beautiful, but under the surface lurks a growing pollution problem that threatens drinking water for millions of Americans. Sewage spills and polluted water that runs off our streets, driveways, and other paved surfaces after rains pose a health hazard for people, as well as fish and wildlife.

American Rivers is working with community leaders, public health officials, and local partners within the river movement to advocate for state and federal community “Right-to-Know” legislation that warns citizens when sewage is being dumped into rivers.

We’re also educating developers, local governments, and local partners about natural stormwater management techniques. These include permeable paving and the creation of rain gardens, which beautify communities while reducing impervious surfaces, infiltrating stormwater into the ground, and reducing pollutants that would flow into rivers and streams.
