Good News, Levees Repaired

Emergency levee repairs complete
Sacramento Business Journal - 2:39 PM PST Wednesday

The 29 levee sites classified as critical after Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced a state of emergency last spring for the state's flood protection system have been repaired on time, the Department of Water Resources announced Wednesday.

The water resources department was responsible for repairs at 19 levee sites, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers repaired 10 sites. Both groups had pledge to complete the repairs by Nov. 1.

"Thanks to tremendous cooperation by state and federal agencies and hard work of the department's levee repair team, these sires are now ready for the upcoming flood season," water resources director Lester Snow said in a press release.

The Army Corps, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Oceaniac and Atmospheric Administration expedited the permitting process to ensure the levee repairs complied with environmental protection laws and complete work on schedule.

Work is continuing on four additional sites identified in August. Repairs on those levees should be completed by Nov. 30.
