Great idea from a letter in the Bee today:
The letter:
A River Walk for Sacramento?
Fortunately, our capital is blessed with the proximity and natural beauty of the confluence of two major rivers, the American River of Gold Rush fame and the mighty Sacramento. Unfortunately, we haven't given thought to the economic development potential of our natural treasure. At present we only swim and launch boats there.
I suggest Sacramento civic leaders explore the feasibility of constructing a world-class tourist attraction similar to San Antonio's River Walk. The 240-acre Union Pacific railyard redevelopment project must be carefully planned so that this unique opportunity for Sacramento will not be lost forever. West Sacramento civic leaders are already planning their riverfront redevelopment project.
I think Sacramento should consider the possibility of tapping water from the American River and diverting it through the railyard redevelopment area. Diverted water could then be reintroduced to the Sacramento River, below the confluence, after having passed through the River Walk.
An 1849 Gold Rush theme could be incorporated into River Walk restaurants, hotels and upscale shops that would be privately financed. It's a win-win situation.
What say you, civic leaders?
