A 17-year-old boy was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center late Friday afternoon after falling off a bluff above the American River.
The boy was taking pictures with two other teens on top of Fair Oaks Bluffs, east of the Fair Oaks footbridge, when the ground apparently gave way beneath him, said Engineer Christian Pebbles, spokesman for Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District.
The boy fell 50 to 75 feet to the riverbank below, Pebbles said, and suffered trauma to the torso and hip.
Pebbles said the incident illustrates the dangers of the bluffs.
"At no point during the day or night is the bluff a place to be walking around," he said. "The earth is unstable there and it's no place to be hanging out, walking or hiking."
