Regional digest: American River's flows reduced for safer holiday
Published 12:01 am PDT Monday, July 3, 2006
SACRAMENTO -- Federal officials have reduced water flows into the American River for the duration of the July Fourth holiday in order to help ensure safer boating and swimming.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation cut releases from Nimbus Dam from about 5,000 cubic feet per second on Thursday to 4,000 cfs by Friday morning.
Water flows will be held at about 4,000 cfs through Tuesday.
Even so, officials warn that boaters and swimmers enjoying the American River should use caution throughout the holiday because water flows are still colder and faster than normal for this time of year.
River parkway projects get funding
SACRAMENTO -- Two area river parkway projects will receive more than $3 million in state funding to improve public access and restore habitat.
The city of West Sacramento will receive $977,000 to extend its Riverwalk park on the west bank of the Sacramento River.
The American River Conservancy, a nonprofit based in Coloma, will receive $2.3 million to construct a parkway along the south fork of the American River.
Both grants were announced Friday by California Resources Secretary Mike Chrisman, who disclosed grants totaling $38.5 million for 37 river parkway projects statewide.
Funding comes from Proposition 50, approved by California voters in 2002.
