Restoration project takes root among giant sequoias

Though it is no longer surprising it is still a disconcerting to read a report on Sacramento flood issues and not see the words Auburn Dam anywhere in the story.

But that is what happened when I read the story in the October issue of Comstock’s entitled
Quantifying Havoc: A New Orleans-style flood in Sacramento could cripple our economy—and threaten the fiscal stability of the entire state and nation. By Rich Ehisen

In the concluding paragraphs of the article where solutions are somewhat addressed one leaves with the impression that the only solution to flooding is stronger levees—and the old reliable of stopping development—while most people in Sacramento now know that levees only provide, at best, 200 year protection (New Orleans had 250 year protection) while the Auburn Dam is the only solution providing 500 year protection.

Another missed opportunity to inform the business community about flood issues is lost, but the same issue has an excellent story on the riverfront development West Sacramento is planning.
