INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. -- The University of California's new research center in this resort town on Lake Tahoe's north shore is not named for Charles Goldman. But it might as well be. It wouldn't exist without him.

The UC Davis professor has dedicated his professional life to the study of the lake and its clarity. His warnings a generation ago first sounded the alarm on Tahoe's degradation, eventually leading to the rerouting of treated sewage and tight restrictions on development that was polluting the world-renowned resource.

If not for Goldman, today's omnipresent call to "Keep Tahoe Blue" wouldn't make any sense. The lake would have lost its color and its clarity long ago.
