Those entering the world's largest corn maze near Dixon might notice an error in the map they were given, an obvious mistake that makes them doubt the map's accuracy.
It's no mistake, however. Maze designer Mark Cooley said he inserted the error to weed out those who might panic or give up when faced with the stress and confusion of the 40-acre labyrinth.
"It's kind of a test," Cooley said. "You have to have enough patience and problem-solving skills to make it through. You have to have enough resolve to solve the puzzle and get out."
The corn maze at Cool Patch Pumpkins was named the world's largest by Guinness World Records last month. From the air, it looks like ancient runes and the Sunday crossword puzzle.
The size and complexity of the maze can make it a daunting challenge for many, taking from one to three hours to complete. At its worst, it can cause surging adrenaline and a longing to be free of its claustrophobic corridors.
Even Cooley, who runs the maze with his brother Matt, said he doesn't like to venture into its most twisted portions, a maddening grid of dead ends and trails that double back.
