Seventeen California counties damaged by flooding from record rainfall this past spring were declared federal disaster areas by President Bush on Monday.
Millions of dollars in federal aid will be made available to help the counties recover from the flooding, landslides and mudslides that resulted from the severe storms that battered the state from March 29 to April 16.
"It is great news for the counties trying to recover from the spring storms that they will now have the aid I requested from the federal government," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "These counties were hit hard and that's why we pushed for a federal disaster declaration that would put badly needed funds into those areas of California that need help cleaning up and recovering."
Among those deemed as disaster areas were the Bay Area counties of Alameda, Marin, Napa, San Mateo and Sonoma.
The other counties were Santa Cruz, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Lake, Madera, Merced, Nevada, Placer, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Tuolumne.
The declaration was welcome news in the affected counties.
