Repaving of part of the American River Parkway Trail near Cal Expo will be delayed a week. Cyclists will have to take detours when the repairs begin.

Union Pacific officials were planning to begin Monday fixing a portion of the trail that was affected by a March 15 railroad trestle blaze. Contractors were moved to an emergency elsewhere and were not able to start on the parkway project, said Vanessa Martin, a spokeswoman for the Sacramento County parks department.

The stretch -- from mile marker 3.5 to mile marker 6 -- will remain open until next Monday.

For two weeks after that, cyclists will need to take a detour. Signs are posted to alert riders to choose one of two detours:

• Inside the parkway along a 3/4-mile dirt trail.
• Outside the parkway along a 2-mile paved road and a gravel-topped levee.

Cyclists also can take side streets.

During construction to replace the burned trestle, UP occasionally allowed cyclists to go through the trail if it was safe. The final grading and repaving of the trail, however, will force cyclists to use the detours, according to the parks department.
