It has been almost two years since the hurricane struck, flooding the city of New Orleans, and this report chronicles what has occurred since.
Sacramento is the city with the highest risk of flooding of any major river city, and still has less flood protection—barely a 100 year level—compared to the pre-Katrina level of New Orleans, a 250 year level; so this report can give a sense of what might happen here unless we take seriously the need to reach the flood protection level most other major river cities already have, a 500 year level.
TRACKING RECOVERY OF THE REGION
Two years after Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent levee failures, the New Orleans region has recovered most of its population and economic base. Yet, in the past year, progress has slowed, especially in the city, as critical public infrastructure-schools, law enforcement, and health care-remains weak. As recovery continues, a strong federal, state, and local partnership is necessary to ensure a safe and economically robust region for all.
