A bitter two-year battle over parks in Elk Grove has ended with staunch rivals agreeing to work as equal partners to buy and develop most of the city's future parks and recreation facilities.

The highly public fight, which worsened when the parks district quit maintaining the city's landscaped roadside median strips, ended Wednesday night after a 30-minute closed City Council meeting.

"This has been going on for a long time," Mayor Jim Cooper said when the council reconvened in public session. "I think we are all very happy that it has finally come to an end."

The council voted 5-0 in the closed meeting to sign the pact. The Cosumnes Community Services District endorsed the agreement in a 5-0 vote during its own closed meeting on Aug. 7.
