New Placer Park

This sounds like a real beautiful addition to the Placer County Park system, and I wonder if the Didion family who once owned the ranch is the family of the famous author from Sacramento, Joan Didion.

An excerpt.

Come fall, Placer County outdoor enthusiasts will have a new venue in which to explore and enjoy the majestic change of seasons.

County officials last week broke ground on the new, 220- acre section of Hidden Falls Regional Park, a 1,180-acre open space park 3 1/2 miles west of Auburn.

The park, scheduled to open to the public in mid-October, is the latest achievement of Placer Legacy, a county program that seeks to preserve agriculture and open space.

"It's gorgeous," Supervisor Robert Weygandt said of the park. "It clearly is the crown jewel to date of Placer Legacy.

"It's really cool because it's the way it has looked for a thousand years, and it will look that way for a thousand more."

The parcel, formerly known as Didion Ranch, abuts a 960-acre site known as Spears Ranch that the county also purchased as part of the park project, said Albert Richie, deputy director of facility services for the county.

The Didion property was acquired in 2004 for $767,000, while Spears Ranch was bought in 2003 for $3.5 million, he said.
