FOLSOM -- Legislation necessary for a new bridge below Folsom Dam has been signed into law.

State Sen. Dave Cox, R-Fair Oaks, announced Friday that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill authorizing the state Department of General Services to sell 14 acres to Folsom for the bridge. Most of the property is on the grounds of Folsom State Prison.

"We are obviously pleased that that part of the acquisition went smoothly," said Mayor Andy Morin.

The City Council approved the environmental impact report for the project on on Tuesday, he said.

The federal Bureau of Reclamation closed the road over Folsom Dam as a safety measure after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The closure affected approximately 15,000 motorists who used the road daily.

The city must acquire additional land from private owners, and Morin said negotiations are progressing well.

The city expects to go to bid in a few weeks, he said, and to award the contract in December. Groundbreaking is anticipated in January or February.
